Disposable Plates, Cups, Utensils to be Compostable by January 1, 2022

compostables required by 1.1.22

The sustainability packaging and litter reduction ordinance (Municipal Code Section 6-6.100) requires businesses that offer or sell food and beverages to implement the following changes by January 1st, 2022:

  • Use only BPI-certified compostable food-service products (disposable plates, cups, utensils, etc.) for both take-out and dine-in. All disposable food-service ware must be compostable and must include the BPI compostable logo (as defined by ASTM standards).
  • Install three color coded bins clearly labeled for food scraps (green), recyclables (blue), and garbage (black).
  • Required to charge customers $0.10 cents for single-use cups to encourage reusable cups and bottles.

For detailed information on this ordinance and for a list of vendors providing certified compostable food service ware, please visit our website
