Resolving traffic issues works best when residents and City staff work together. City efforts to successfully solve traffic safety issues in neighborhoods are only effective with the participation of the community. The City's Neighborhood Traffic Plan approved in 2001 and updated this June 2017 was developed by the Police, Public Works & Utilities, and Parks and Community Services Departments in an effort to address concerns expressed by residents regarding speeding and other traffic issues in their neighborhood. The goal of this Plan is to provide residents the opportunity to become actively involved in the improvement of their neighborhoods and to work with the City to improve traffic safety and quality of life.
The Neighborhood Traffic Planis based upon a combination of various elements that include Education, Enforcement and Engineering. The Plan outlines:
- The process and various strategies that can address traffic issues
- What "traffic calming" is and how it can help
- What types of streets can support traffic calming
- How to start a Neighborhood Traffic Group
Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Improvements is one of the top priority projects that was identified through the Measure D community survey conducted in February 2017. The proposed 2017-2019 City budget includes Measure D funding to address neighborhood traffic safety. Measure D funding can be used to leverage grants and/or to supplement in-kind funding from other sources.
