City crews begin rolling out new green bins to residents

green bins

Crews from our Solid Waste Division are on a roll delivering thousands of green bins as part of our Residential Organics Collection Service.

Watsonville residents will now be able to place their food waste from their kitchen, as well as yard waste into these green bins. Residents will receive a notice in the mail letting them know when to expect their new bin.

“If residents already have a yard waste bin, you’re simply going to start using that as an organics bin,” explained Tami Stolzenthaler, Senior Environmental Project Analyst with the City of Watsonville Public Works and Utilities Department. “What that means is now you can make a mix of your yard waste and all of your food scraps into that bin.”

This statewide effort known as SB 1383, which aims to reduce emissions, requires all Californians to participate. The green bins will be collected on your normal collection day.

“By recycling these organics, it’s going to be turned into compost and it turns out that if we just throw this stuff away, sitting in the landfill it’s converting into methane gas,” said Stolzenthaler.
