You’ve probably heard of “Coffee with a Cop” but what about “Agua Con la Chota”?
That’s “Water with a Cop” and it is a program we’re bringing back this season with the goal of building stronger community relationships.
The idea is simple: Our officers head to the ag fields to meet with workers and chat about a wide range of subjects including immigration, affordable housing, and standard police procedures.
With the help of the Community Action Board, the Mexican Consulate and sponsors, we’re able to hold several sessions with different work crews and wrap up the program with a BBQ.
This community traditionally fears police so it’s important they feel comfortable with us and know that our officers are here to help them.
We also want them to realize that many of us are just like them; Spanish was our first language, we worked long hours in the fields and family is and will always be our priority.
Little by little and one bottle of water at a time, we hope to gain their trust.

Fortalecer los lazos con la comunidad- esa es la meta de nuestro programa “Agua con la Chota” que reiniciamos esta temporada.
La idea es muy simple: Nuestros oficiales van a los campos agrícolas para conocer a los campesinos y platicar con ellos sobre varios temas incluyendo inmigración, viviendas asequibles y procedimientos de la agencia.
Con la ayuda de la organización Community Action Board, el Consulado General de México y patrocinadores, realizamos varias sesiones informativas y le damos cierre al programa con una carne asada.
Sabemos que tradicionalmente la comunidad Hispana teme de la policía y eso es lo que buscamos cambiar. Es muy importante que se sientan cómodos con nuestros oficiales y que sepan que estamos aquí para ayudarlos.
Recuerden, muchos de nuestros oficiales son como ustedes; el español fue su primer idioma, vivieron en carne propia el arduo trabajo del campo y la familia es y siempre será su prioridad.
Poco a poco y con un “Agua con la Chota” esperamos ganarnos su confianza.
