EDITH stands for Exit Drills In The Home

EDITH

EDITH can help you and your family prepare for an emergency. Do you and your family know how to escape from your home during a fire?

Most everyone has probably done a fire drill at school or maybe at work and they know where the exits are, where to go and what to do in an emergency. But, do you know how to escape from your home during a fire? Do you and your family know where to meet to make sure everyone is safe? Most home fires occur at night when people are the least prepared. If you and your family have not practiced how to escape during an emergency, home fires can become a disaster.

To begin, design your fire escape plan by sketching the floor plan of your home on a piece of paper. Your plan should include all doors, windows and other areas from which you could escape from each room in your home. Draw arrows to indicate the normal exits which would be your primary escape route. With an alternate color, draw arrows to indicate a secondary exit from each room in the home. Make sure to include your meeting place. Don’t forget to plan for the escape of someone with special needs - how will they get out? One you have designed your plan, TEST IT. Make sure it works. And then run through your drills with all family members on a regular basis using the primary and alternate routes. This will help you make sure the plan still works and make sure your paths are always clear.

Everyone should also know where the nearest phone is in your home and outside your home (a neighbor’s house) and everyone should know how to call 911. If there is a fire in your home, once you get out, call 911. If you plan and prepare, when an emergency strikes, it won’t be as scary because you will know what to do.
