Watsonville Municipal Airport Closure of Primary & Crosswind Runways

closure of runways

The closure will take place from May 9th-May 15th. The closure is being conducted to make various repairs.

Watsonville Municipal Airport (KWVI) is announcing the temporary closure of both the primary 4,501 foot Runway 2-20 and the crosswind 3,998 foot Runway 9-27 for six days as part of an eight day construction effort beginning Thursday, May 9, 2019, and is expected to reopen at 8:00 am, Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Construction will be continuous, 24 hours per day.  The Airport Director has advised on–field businesses, tenants and travelers planning to arrive or depart WVI during this period to make alternative arrangements. Additionally, the airport has reached out to surrounding area residents and businesses to communicate the late night and early morning activity will remain within the airport field environments.

The closure is being conducted to repair linear fissures and cracks, which includes routing, filling, slurry sealing, remarking and upgrading lighting for the primary runway for arriving and departing flights. Given Watsonville’s intersecting runway configuration the construction will result in both runways being closed during the six day effort. The project will repair/rehabilitate the entire runway length, including the 4,701-foot parallel taxiway ALFA and taxiways CHARLIE, DELTA and ECHO.

The last time the Watsonville Municipal Airport repaved the entire length of Runway 2-20 was in 1986. During the 2013 Airport Layout Plan review it was determined that the runway was showing signs of fatigue cracking due to age, exacerbated by the increasing amount of aircraft activity.  Airport staff and consulting engineers evaluated multiple options and in August 2018 obtained a $1.2m FAA airport improvement construction grant to repair the runway.

This timeframe was chosen for the low probability of precipitation, as dry weather is necessary for asphalt paving and the availability of multiple construction crews working in parallel.
